Saw series director still wants to reboot Leprechaun franchise

March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day, the date when people celebrate the patron saint of Ireland and the day when director Darren Bousman reminds everyone that he really wants to reboot the Leprechaun horror franchise.

“It’s that time of year again where I remind my good friends at Lionsgate that I still want to reboot the Leprechaun movie (AGAIN)…” Bousman wrote on Twitter earlier todaythis link opens in a new tab. “Lep gets in a time machine and goes back to the Colorado Gold Rush. You guys have my number, I’ll be sitting by the phone.”

You have to figure that Lionsgate, which oversees the Leprechaun franchise, at least owes Bousman a call. The filmmaker directed three films in the Saw series for the studio and his desire to takeover the Leprechaun series dates back over a decade.

“I have always loved the Leprechaun franchise,” Bousman told EW in 2014. “So much so I pleaded desperately to anyone who would listen to let me direct a reboot some years back. There was something so ridiculously fun and silly about them. A lot of people shunned the sequels, but for my money, nothing is better than watching a franchise let its villain go to Vegas, space, the hood, and then back to the hood.”

The first film in the series, 1993’s Leprechaun, starred Warwick Davis as the mythical, and in this version, homicidal character. The low-budget movie costarred a pre-Friends Jennifer Aniston and grossed more than $8 million. Davis would play the part of the diminutive monster in five sequels, including 1997’s Leprechaun 4: In Space and 2000’s Leprechaun in the Hood.

Lionsgate has twice rebooted the Leprechaun franchise in recent times, replacing Davis with WWE wrestler Hornswoggle for 2014’s Leprechaun: Origins and then recruiting Linden Porco to play the title role in last year’s Leprechaun Returns.

Bousman’s other directing credits include 2008’s Repo! The Genetic Opera and this year’s St. Agatha.
